Thammasat University 90th Anniversary Mark

The brief

A ninetieth anniversary is a difficult number to design. It is old enough to demand gravity and recent enough that the institution is still very much at work — so a mark that reads as a monument would misrepresent it, and one that reads as a party would trivialise it.

The mark had to survive being reproduced by hundreds of hands across a university: printed at 8 mm on a lanyard, embroidered, cut in vinyl, laid over photography, and set in a single ink when the budget allowed nothing else.

The decision

Rather than draw the numerals and decorate them, the nine and the zero were constructed from the three primitives every design student meets first — point, line and plane. The geometry is the argument: an institution built up from elemental parts, still assembling.

That construction is also what makes the mark transferable. Because the form is structural rather than illustrative, it survives translation into embroidery thread, vinyl, single-colour print and screen without losing its identity — and each of those reproductions is measurably the same mark.

Outcome

The mark was adopted at institution level and disseminated through the university’s official channels, becoming the visual signature of the anniversary year across print, environmental and digital applications.
